What are cookies?

Cookies are text files that websites store on a user’s device (computer, smartphone, tablet, etc.) when the user accesses a service.

These stored cookies can then perform various functions, depending on their type. For example, they can track browsing sessions or save settings like language preference. They can also be used to facilitate browsing, to remember information entered in forms, or to keep track of user preferences.

The information stored in cookies may include language choice, device information, and, in some cases, personal data such as IP address, username, e-mail address, or other unique identifiers.

There are two main types of cookies based on who stores them: first-party cookies are installed by the visited website, while second-party cookies are installed by web servers or websites other than the visited one.

Cookies can also be categorised based on their storage duration: “session cookies” expire at the end of a browsing session, while “persistent cookies” remain on a user’s device for a predetermined time after the session ends.

Cookies can be categorised further based on their type and function:

  • Technical cookies: pursuant to art. 122 of the Legislative Decree no. 196/2003 (Italian personal data protection code), these cookies are used for the sole purpose of “carrying out the transmission of a communication over an electronic communications network, or to the extent strictly necessary for the provider of an information society service explicitly requested by the contracting party or user to provide that service”. In simpler terms, these cookies ensure the website’s essential functioning and/or certain features (like user authentication or language preference).
  • Analytical cookies: these cookies gather information about website usage (number of visitors, pages viewed, time spent, etc.). When collected anonymously and in aggregate, they fall under the (macro)category of technical cookies.
  • Profiling cookies: these cookies track specific user actions or behaviour patterns associated with identified or identifiable individuals in order to group different profiles into homogeneous clusters of different sizes, enabling a more personalised experience beyond what is strictly necessary for the delivery of the service. Additionally, profiling cookies can be used for targeted advertising based on browsing preferences.

Cookies on this website

In addition to technical cookies, the Website uses some cookies that improve the user experience, allowing interaction (via icons, widgets and/or other elements) with platforms, networks, contents and/or resources external to the Website, and cookies aimed at measuring traffic and carrying out statistical analyses on user behaviour to improve the service.

Legal bases

The use of technical cookies takes place, without the consent of the interested party, on the basis of art. 122 co. 1 par. II of the Legislative Decree no. 196/2003, while the use of other categories of cookies takes place on the basis of the consent of the interested party.

The granting of consent for cookies other than those of a technical nature is optional and any refusal does not have any consequences, in particular on the possibility of browsing the Website. Where given, consent can be revoked at any time, without any prejudice to the legitimacy of the processing carried out before the revocation itself.

Revoking consent and managing cookies

By clicking on the icon of a stylized lock, located on the right, at the bottom of the Website, the user can revoke the consent previously expressed at any time.

Alternatively, cookie preferences can be managed directly through browser settings, allowing deletion of previously stored cookies.

Retention period

All cookies used by the Website are stored for a period of two months.
