By 2030, millions of tonnes of batteries will reach their end of service, according to major international organisations and research bodies. In this scenario, as an innovative technology provider, we believe we must prioritise reuse and repurposing to minimise our environmental footprint and keep valuable resources in the loop.
Guided by this vision for sustainable management and collaborating with the research group led by Prof. Marcello Colledani from Politecnico di Milano, we have designed and built a semi-automated system to bridge the gap between a battery’s first and second life. The system is now installed at the CIRC-eV lab of the Politecnico’s Department of Mechanical Engineering.
The system handles the disassembly of modules down to the cell level and the re-assembly of cells into new modules for secondary applications. As the bus bars are a critical component, we paid particular attention to their accurate removal and subsequent laser welding.
